๐Ÿ“– What You Need to Know

Division Key Ideas

  • What is division? Splitting a total into equal groups. 24 รท 6 means "split 24 into 6 equal groups" โ†’ each group gets 4.
  • Parts of a division problem: Dividend (the big number you start with) รท Divisor (how many groups) = Quotient (the answer โ€” size of each group).
  • Division is the inverse of multiplication! If 6 ร— 4 = 24, then 24 รท 6 = 4 and 24 รท 4 = 6. They undo each other.
  • Fact families: Three numbers make a fact family. Example โ€” 3, 8, 24 โ†’ 3ร—8=24, 8ร—3=24, 24รท3=8, 24รท8=3. All four facts use the same three numbers!
  • Check your answer: Multiply quotient ร— divisor. If it equals the dividend, you're right! 4 ร— 6 = 24 โœ“
  • Strategy tip: Think "what times ___ equals ___?" Example: 42 รท 7 โ†’ "what ร— 7 = 42?" โ†’ 6!
  • Dividing by 1: Any number รท 1 = itself. 9 รท 1 = 9.
  • Dividing by itself: Any number รท itself = 1. 7 รท 7 = 1.
  • Zero rule: 0 รท any number = 0. You can never divide by 0.

Read each story problem carefully. What is being divided? Into how many groups? Write your answer and check it.

๐Ÿช Worksheet 5 โ€” Remainders

Sometimes things don't divide evenly โ€” there's some left over! Fill in both blanks: how many each person/group gets, and how many are left over.

How Remainders Work

  • What is a remainder? The amount left over after dividing as evenly as possible. Example: 17 รท 5 = 3 remainder 2 (three groups of 5 = 15, with 2 left over).
  • How to find it: Divide โ†’ find the biggest multiple that fits โ†’ subtract. 50 รท 3: 3ร—16=48 (fits), 50โˆ’48=2. So answer is 16 remainder 2.
  • Check your work: (quotient ร— divisor) + remainder = original number. 16ร—3+2 = 48+2 = 50 โœ“
  • The remainder is always smaller than the divisor. If 50รท3 and your remainder is 3 or more, you can fit one more group!
