Social Studies Skills
Primary vs. secondary sources, timelines, graphs, fact vs. opinion, cause & effect, and book parts
๐ Worksheet 1 โ Primary vs. Secondary Sources
A primary source comes from someone who was actually there. A secondary source is written by someone who learned about the event later. Read each description and decide which type it is.
Quick Guide
- Primary sources: diary entries ยท personal letters ยท photographs taken at the time ยท speeches given by the person ยท eyewitness accounts ยท official documents signed at the time (Declaration of Independence)
- Secondary sources: textbooks ยท encyclopedias ยท biographies (written by someone else) ยท documentaries ยท museum exhibits ยท news articles written after the event
- Trick: Ask "Was the author there when it happened?" If yes โ primary. If no โ secondary.
๐ Worksheet 2 โ Reading Timelines & Graphs
Use the timeline and bar graph below to answer each question.
How to Read a Timeline
- Earlier dates are on the left; later dates are on the right
- To find how many years between two events: subtract the earlier year from the later year
- Events are listed in chronological order (time order)
How to Read a Bar Graph
- Look at the title to know what is being compared
- Read the scale on the side to know what each bar height means
- The tallest bar = most; the shortest bar = least
- To find the difference between two bars: subtract the smaller from the larger
๐ง Worksheet 3 โ Fact, Opinion, Cause & Effect, and Book Parts

- Opinion: a personal belief, feeling, or judgment. Cannot be proven. Often contains words like best, worst, should, I think, I believe, most important.
Cause & Effect
- Cause = why something happened ยท Effect = what happened as a result
- Clue words: because, as a result, therefore, so, led to, caused
Parts of a Book
- Table of Contents: lists chapters in order, at the FRONT of the book โ tells you what page each chapter starts on
- Index: alphabetical list of topics at the BACK โ tells you exact page numbers where that topic appears
- Glossary: dictionary of key terms at the BACK โ gives definitions of important words used in the book
